Azerbaijan to host COP 29 UN Climate Conference

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), more commonly known as COP 29, will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024.

The Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC has been a critical platform since 1995, bringing together countries annually to assess progress and strategize on combating climate change. COP 29 in Azerbaijan represents a continuation of these efforts, with nations collaborating to address one of the most pressing global challenges.

The conference will provide a platform for nations to share progress, challenges, and plans for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future. COP29, like its predecessors, will focus on advancing the goals of the UNFCCC to limit global warming, adapt to the impacts of climate change, and mobilize financing for investment in climate action.

The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference will include the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties, the 19th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, and the sixth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement that will convene to complete the first enhanced transparency framework and the new collective quantified goal on finance, among other matters. The 61st sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation will also meet.

The UNFCCC is a multilateral treaty adopted in 1992 with the ultimate aim of preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system. Since entering into force in 1994, the UNFCCC has provided the basis for international climate negotiations, including landmark agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol (1997) and the Paris Agreement (2015). Today there are 198 Parties to the Convention and the countries who have joined the UNFCCC meet to measure progress and negotiate multilateral responses to climate change.

The Conference of the Parties is the supreme governing body of the UNFCCC and is composed of representatives of the member states of the convention and accredited observers. The host country of the COP rotates among the five United Nations regional groups (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Latin American and the Caribbean, and Western European and Others), with regional group members determining which country from their region will make an offer to host the conference.
